AVP Laura Van Vliet Appointed To The CIP National Council

Established in 1899, the non-profit Insurance Institute of Canada serves as “the premier source of professional education and career development for the country’s property and casualty insurance industry.”1 The Institute’s professionals’ division is known as the CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) National Council. This highly regarded Council recently appointed ALIGNED AVP Laura Van Vliet, CIP, CRM, CPIB to serve as one of 12 members.

“The mandate of the Council is to provide development opportunities, new services and products for members of the Insurance Institute’s graduate community.”2 With more than 39,000 members, the Institute “sets professional standards for the industry through education programs that lead to a range of designations and certificates, including the internationally recognized Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP).”3

Recently, Van Vliet was also recognized by the CIP Society as the 2016 National Emerging Leader. Laura shares, “I am thrilled to take an even more active role with the CIP National Council of the Insurance Institute. It is quite an honour to be part of this important group and contribute to the future of the P&C industry in a very tangible and meaningful way.”

As a graduate of Conestoga College’s General Business and Business of Insurance programs, Van Vliet didn’t initially plan a career in insurance. In fact, she credits a college professor with sparking her interest in the property & casualty industry. Laura notes, “Like many, I fell into insurance as a career. It has been incredibly rewarding so far and I’m very excited about where the industry is headed.”

As an active volunteer, Van Vliet has taken part in Habitat for Humanity builds in Thailand and, more locally, in Waterloo region. Within the insurance industry, she also sits as a Councillor for the Conestoga Insurance Institute Chapter, occupies a role on Conestoga College’s Panel Advisory Committee for Business of Insurance and is a Career Connections Ambassador.
