About Doctors Without Borders – Delivering Medical Aid Where It Is Needed Most
Proudly independent, neutral and impartial, this global organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 for its work around the world. “In 1968, a group of young doctors from France decided they wanted to use their medical training to help victims of wars and major disasters elsewhere in the world.
This simple idea eventually developed into a new brand of humanitarianism, one that would reinvent the concept of emergency aid. The young doctors were to become Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders— MSF.”1
Doctors Without Borders – How They Help
With a national office in Toronto as well as an office in Montreal, Doctors Without Borders is a registered charity that connects Canadian medical professionals to global healthcare needs.
“Canadian volunteers first came together to create an MSF association in 1989, and MSF in Canada formally joined the international movement in 1991. MSF staff in Canada recruit medical and logistical personnel for field missions; raise public awareness of the plight of the populations MSF cares for; and finance international MSF projects by raising funds from the general public (72 per cent in 2014) and the Canadian government (19 per cent in 2014). A portion of Canadian funding also comes from grants from other MSF sections as well as interest (nine per cent in 2014).”2
